Borough Market, London

On Saturday, I went to Borough Market with my family and some good friends.  I had never been before and had seen it many a time on TV cookery programmes and always wanted to go.  It always looks so good.  Well I wasn't disappointed!

The market is a mixture of stalls selling food ready to eat and stalls selling their wares.  There are lots of delicious smells and plenty on traders giving away free samples to try.  I especially liked the Comte cheese stall, I stayed with a French family when I was 17 and went to the fromagerie, we ate Comte and drank red wine form a hip flask on the ski slopes in summer.

My husband's friend especially liked the stall selling olive oil, but not for the olive oil but for the balsamic vinegar.  He bought a bottle but I have to say a preferred the balsamic vinegar from the stall facing Southwark Cathedral.

My son had a kangaroo burger, he will eat anything.  I have to say it was lovely.

Just opposite the stall I liked, selling balsamic vinegar, is Mountain's Boston Sausage company stall.  This is my favourite sausage shop in Boston, which is my home town.  I always bring back sausages from there (or get my family to when they visit).  Our favourite is their farmhouse chipolatas.  I got my sister to bring me back some Bateman's ale sausages from there this weekend, I haven't tried them yet, so will blog about them when I do!

Whilst in the area we also visited some local hostelries, well it would be rude not to!

We went to:

  • The Market Porter Excellent selection of real ales and still has the early opening (6-8.30am) for the market traders

  • The Rake - Smallest pub in London with the biggest selection of beers, reminded me of being in Bruges.

  • The George - Pretty galleried pub, off of Borough High Street.  Building owned by the National Trust, pub run by Greene King, spoiled by commercialism in my opinion.
  • The Kings Head - Good selection of real ale but they don't allow kids in unless there are tables to sit at and there wasn't so I ended up sitting outside in the freezing cold with two grumpy children
